Projects

Target: Onboarding application for independent contract drivers

This prototype was used as a communication tool between business, UX, and development, a testing ground for the flow of the onboarding process, and an artifact for the engineering team to work from. I designed the layout, did most of the writing, configured the style guide, and put together some of the front-end code for the templates and stylized form elements. Also included in the prototype pages are screens from a competitive analysis I put together.

Optum: UX Research

I’ve often worked as a solo UX Designer on projects where we don’t have a dedicated researcher or a budget for research, so I’ve ran the full design-thinking process, including doing research interviews and data analysis. In this example, called Project Phoenix (aptly, I learned later, because the business owners were resurrecting a previous application that failed due to user adoption), I used a research technique that compiled interview data and grouped it into themes to prioritize what was most important to users.

US Bank Login AssistanceUS Bank: Login Assistance

This effort was unique in that we designed login assistance to be responsive and available to both the desktop version of online banking and the app (using the same code base). The prototype I put together initially acted as a communication tool for meetings that were conducted via web ex. The collaboration style at the bank was primarily via phone and screen share, so all meetings, including stand ups, were remote. It’s a challenging way to work, but the prototype helped to keep us aligned during discussions. It was also used as a visual guide by engineering and as validation tool by QA.

Optum Global Fax and Forms Optimization Style guideOptum Healthcare: Global Fax and Forms Optimization Style Guide

I used this style guide and category map to jumpstart conversations with different internal user groups at Optum when on calls discussing how they use their healthcare forms. Primarily, I wanted to know what information was important in the form, which fields in the form, if any, caused confusion in their department or with users, and if they had thoughts on how the process could be improved. After doing a content inventory of about 50 forms, I started grouping fields, determining where there was crossover between patient and provider information, and noting fields that were unique to specific lines of business.

Medtronic PRL website designMedtronic: Brand and Style Guide update for digital

While I was at Medtronic, the company was undergoing a complete brand and style guide overhaul. Medtronic had just merged with Covidien, a global health care products manufacturer based in Ireland, and doubled in size. Our team was responsible for translating the print style guide that had been developed by a large advertising agency into something we could use on digital material:

  • Medical device websites
  • Email newsletters (internal and external)
  • Medtronic promotional materials
  • Intranet sites

  • Edgile: Site map and content strategy layout for data security firm

This was a pitch for a content overhaul and website reorganization. The company wasn’t ready to make updates to their site, so it never got out of the pitch stage, but I worked with a content strategist on this, and it was an amazing experience. I’ve not often had the chance to work with content strategists, and working with Laura on this project really highlighted the value of partnering with someone who puts content first. It’s the most important element of any interface.

Foundation IP Personas documentCPA Global: Personas

Foundation IP is a SaaS product that manages Intellectual Property Law assets. It’s been around for a while and is a complex piece of software. I developed these personas by getting to know users and mapping their process. They were a huge asset in the planning phase for sprint work. It kept us asking the question, “who is this for?” when looking at potential features, and helped us align business goals with user needs.
